New Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet Wins an Award

Written by MotorImpress.

The new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet has claimed its first award after being named Open-top Car of the Year at the Scottish Car of the Year Awards.

The car which came on sale in September this year, after a nine year absence, is a sleeker version of its predecessor. The model was taken of the market in 2002, but between 1979 and 2002 VW sold 684,000 Golf cabriolets. The popular model of the car was sorely missed during its hiatus and should prove popular in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world next summer. The new version has several new additions including a redesigned quick soft top. The canvas top which takes just nine seconds to unravel works at speeds up to 18mph is a huge improvement on the previous version. The body has also been reworked and looks stylish even in comparison to other more expensive alternatives.

This award will probably be the first of many for the model. The judges from the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers commented: "Scots love to make the most of the sunshine as quickly and as easily as possible, so our winner has to have a fast moving roof. It also needs to keep the weather at bay on those rare occasions when the sun doesn't shine in Scotland.

"An entertaining drive is a must, as are pocket-friendly running costs. Our drop top of the year delivers all of this and even lets you take more than just one friend along for the fun."

The older models of the soft top are still popular as used cars and can still be seen zipping around the countryside today. The new model will soon join a fleet of modern convertibles, although it will most probably beat alternatives in terms of price and fuel economy at a time of austerity. Volkswagen has moved into a luxury market at a time of cut-backs, a very wise move by the car company.
